Moving or changing orthodontists mid treatment

Have you ever wondered what happens to your orthodontic treatment if you move out of San Diego or to another city?

Is it possible for a patient to change orthodontists? In a perfect world, you pick an orthodontist and stick with them until your treatment is finished. But sometimes life throws us a curve and we need to uproot ourselves and move. There are a few things you need to remember about moving once you begin orthodontic treatment:

  1. You only pay for treatment received. This means we will refund you for any amounts you have pre-paid for treatment not yet completed.
  2. To make sure that your new orthodontist picks up where Dr. Henry left off, we will give your orthodontic records to you to take to your new orthodontist; or we will send the records via email. Be sure to provide us with the new doctor’s information.
  3. Keep in mind that it might be more complicated for a new orthodontist to finish your treatment because many orthodontists have different approaches. With this in mind, be prepared to discuss the cost of finishing treatment with the new orthodontic office, and don’t be afraid to get two opinions from different orthodontists in your new location. *We have heard of some orthodontists wanting to remove all of the braces and putting their own braces on. If this happens to you… get another opinion! Dr. Henry will be happy to discuss your braces or invisalign treatment with the new doctor and answer any questions you have.

If you currently have braces or invisalign, changing orthodontists mid treatment because you’re relocating can sometimes be difficult, but if you follow these steps it’ll make switching to a new location much smoother.
